Affordable and market homes built specifically for low-and-moderate income South Australians under a deliberate and targeted stimulus package have flown out the door – and all 100 are now built and sold.
A $21.4 million commitment to build 100 new homes, including 71 affordable homes, is now complete, helping more South Australians into homeownership and providing a major shot-in-the-arm for the construction industry.
The affordable homes sold from as little as $250,000, up to $418,000. Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said first-home buyers had snapped up the homes.
“Our strong plan to increase the supply of affordable housing in South Australia is hitting the mark when it comes to helping people on lower-and-moderate incomes get into homeownership as well as supporting vital jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Minister Lensink.
“In what’s been a challenging and tight housing market, the sale of our 71 affordable homes has given many South Australians the opportunity to buy homes in suburbs within 20-to-40 minutes from the CBD.
“It’s great news because it means people on moderate incomes have been able to purchase a home much closer to the city than they would otherwise be able to and there’s the added bonus of not having to compete with investors or the broader market at auctions.”
The two-and-three bedroom homes were built in Blair Athol, Edwardstown, Findon, Kidman Park, Kilburn, Morphettville, Mt Barker, Pooraka, Woodville Gardens, Taperoo, Tonsley, Croydon Park, Felixstow, Klemzig, South Brighton, South Plympton, Mitchell Park, Devon Park and Elizabeth Park.
Builders were Urban Concept, Simonds SA, Belroc Homes, Lamar Group, Qattro, Rossdale Homes, Rivergum Homes, Centina Homes, Hai Sam and Iacon.
With the 100 homes stimulus now complete, the Marshall Liberal Government’s $400 million commitment to deliver 1000 new affordable homes by 2025 is underway.
Homes are already under construction in Morphettville, Findon, Woodville West, Kidman Park, Dover Gardens and Devon Park.
“Our $400 million commitment to deliver 1000 new affordable homes is creating a steady pipeline of work for our building and construction industry, guaranteeing jobs and certainty for hundreds of tradespeople and their families for the next five years,” said Minister Lensink.
Current eligibility criteria to buy an affordable home:
- Annual household income is less than $110,000 before tax (couple or family) OR $85,000 before tax (single).
- Cannot own any residential property, including overseas or in regional Australia
- Must live in the new home for at least six months within the first 12 months of buying
